Apply to Attend Quality Assurance of HIV-1 Drug Resistance and Data Management Course

Participants are sought for a “Practical Course on Quality Assurance of HIV-1 Drug Resistance Interpretation and Data Management Processes”. Supported by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) and Thermo-Fisher Scientific, the course will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 20-31, August 2018 and will focus on:

  • Determining the quality of sequencing data and understanding the potential causes for poor data quality
  • Understanding the importance of sequence editing quality in the interpretation of HIV drug resistance mutations
  • Proper use of software available for drug resistance analysis
  • Maintaining continuous data quality through proper training and following SOPs
  • Obtaining quality-assured HIV drug resistance data
  • Implementing quality control measures to ensure quality sequencing data
  • Hands-on training with a commercially available HIV genotyping kit

The course is limited to 20 participants, and funding to attend will be provided by CDC and ASLM. Participants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Demonstrate having experience on HIV-1 genotyping
  • Provide recommendation letter from supervisor and in-country CDC office stating candidate’s experience
  • Demonstrate existing laboratory capacity for HIV-1 genotyping at laboratory
  • Fill out laboratory checklist (to be provided)
  • Demonstrate that laboratory is accredited or participating in LQMS efforts (SLMTA/SLIPTA)
  • Provide a complete application form
  • Demonstrate that HIV/AIDS program has plans to implement HIVDR survey/surveillance activities/HIVDR testing within one year
  • Willingness to participate on post-workshop M&E activities
  • Participants must provide their own PC/Windows-based laptop computers
