Self-Care Trailblazers Celebrate World Health Day 2020

We hope you are all keeping well during this trying time. As we all continue to focus on healthcare worldwide, we invite you to join us in recognizing World Health Day 2020.

This year’s theme, which focuses on supporting nurses and midwives, has never been more relevant than now in the era of COVID-19. Our health workforce is being strained to its maximum capacity, and overstretched nurses and midwives are often at the forefront of ensuring that patients receive critical health services.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, official guidance is to steer clear of “hotspots” such as hospitals and clinics.

So, what is the alternative to in-person healthcare? Use telemedicine and hotlines when available, self-diagnose using symptom guidelines, and self-medicate where possible.

This push towards self-care enables people to take actions we once relied on healthcare workers to perform, freeing up nurses, midwives and other members of the health workforce to dedicate their time where it is needed most.

Self-care is not at odds with the healthcare system, but an integral component – and can reduce the strain currently placed on the system, resulting in better, more accessible, participatory and quality healthcare.

As we accelerate towards this transformation in our healthcare system, we are excited to launch our new website www.selfcaretrailblazers.org, to serve as the digital hub for the Self-Care Trailblazer Group (SCTG) and a clearinghouse of self-care related resources, news and more.

This website will be a place where visitors can learn about the work of the SCTG, our activities and upcoming events – digital or otherwise and find answers to self-care related questions.

Happy World Health Day to you all! Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to the quality healthcare they deserve.

Wishing you health and safety,
